Learning programming in a fun way

With the help of a generous donation from the FORUM MEDIA GROUP, KreativWerkstatt Ried is currently offering “Coding Tuesday” – a six-session course in which children aged 10 and over can learn programming in a fun way. With the help of MicroBits, small microcontrollers with integrated sensors, buttons and an LED display, and the Scratch programming platform, children can immediately implement their first mini-projects, even without any previous knowledge of programming. In the very first session, children were soon using the MicroBits to display their own name or a flashing heart.

Exciting start

A total of twelve children and teenagers have been gathering at the KreativWerkstatt Ried premises every Tuesday evening since April 29 to take part in “Coding Tuesday” with their own or a borrowed laptop. The KreativWerkstatt Ried is run by a non-profit association and offers children and young people, as well as adults, the opportunity to develop their creativity in the fields of art, crafts and technology. The aim of “Coding Tuesday” is to learn how to use microbits so well within six sessions that they are able to control a small rocket and collect various measurement data at the same time.

The participating children are enthusiastic about the project and not only tried out the given tasks at the first session, but also implemented their own ideas. The children are allowed to take the Microbits home with them between and after the sessions and continue experimenting with them.

Technology and pizza thanks to a donation

Thanks to a donation of almost €1,000 from the Forum Media Group, an international media group based in Merching, the microbits were purchased and the children were treated to pizza at each session. The current “Coding Tuesday” runs until the beginning of July. However, further courses are to be offered this year so that even more children can gain their first insights into programming.

“We are delighted to support the KreativWerkstatt Ried. Innovative projects such as “Coding Tuesday” are a wonderful enrichment for our home district of Aichach-Friedberg,” says Katrin Krauß-Herkert, CFO/COO of Forum Media Group, who visited the KreativWerkstatt on site last year and was deeply impressed by the association’s activities. Further collaborations are feasible in the future.
